Dogs in the Workplace
I am a huge fan of bringing dogs to work (with a few days staying home and having a walker come). The reason I started my business about ten years ago was because I couldn't leave my pets for long and did not want to daycare them. Pets at work policies are catching on becoming more popular in the Boston area and nationwide as employers recognize its a simple, low cost perk that helps build collaboration and employee retention. Studies show pets lower stress hormones and increase interaction. That said, not all employees are dog people and some may be averse because of either having had a bad experience or physical allergies. Establishing Pets at Work policy guidelines is helpful for managing both people and dogs expectations in the workplace.
While its wonderful to be able to take our dogs to work because they do reduce our anxiety and force us to take breaks by taking a walk outside, not all dogs are able to handle the experience of being in an office. It may be overwhelming for the dog to travel and or the work environment may be too stimulating. Its a good idea to work with a professional dog trainer practiced in dog communication and stress signals like myself to assist you and your office in identifying which of the dogs at your office are better candidates than others. Evaluating the work place to keep dogs safe and reduce their anxiety is something I can assist with.
Another suggestion is to ensure all dogs and their people have had a basic manners training. The first area I like to teach students is sharpening their observational skills by understanding dog body language. It is often misunderstood and misinterpreted leading to more undue stress for the dog and in some cases may lead to people taking the wrong action which reinforces fear, anxiety, stress or aggression in a dog. A well rounded dog training class will also include coaching the work staff and their dogs on 5 basic management skills
If you or your work place would like to set up an appointment for a work place consultation, presentation on dog communication and safety at work or enroll in group training classes call 617-464-1005 or complete the form below. Thank you.
